Benign & Malignant Tumors

The head and neck region is not only the pathway between the brain and the rest of the body, but also the connection to our surroundings and key senses are in this strategic area, such as hearing, sight, taste, and smell. In addition our organs of communication are located here as well. Tumors in this area always present a complex problem.

The head and neck surgeon is the focal point in the treatment strategy for such tumors. A team approach is needed, including head & neck surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, speech & swallow therapists, prosthodontists, and reconstructive surgeons.

Types of tumors treated:

  • Parotid and other salivary glands
  • Ear & temporal bone
  • skin of face/neck & scalp
  • nose, sinuses & skull base
  • tongue, jaw and cheek
  • tonsil, palate, pharynx & hypopharynx
  • larynx
  • thyroid

Our team of experts will carefully review each case and consider each patients unique circumstances and after a detailed discussion devise a comprehensive treatment plan.

Innovative treatments such as minimally invasive approaches, endoscopic laser surgery, image guided surgery, and intensity modulated radiation therapy are a few of the state-of-the-art treatment options available to our patients.

If a mass is found, tests will be run to determine whether the tumor is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). This may involve blood or urine sampling, fine needle aspiration, biopsy, laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, nasopharyngoscopy, electrocardiogram or other tests. Treatment depends on the tumor site, size and type as well as involvement of other structures and the patient’s overall health and preferences.
